「Inside MOTT THE HOOPLE」

For a young English man 24 years old, going to play rock in America was a dream come true.
Joining Mott the Hoople was another dream come true.
I had to photograph this experience so that I would never forget it...

This photo exhibition makes no apologies for being raw, unedited and funky.
Most of the photographs were shot in chaotic circumstances - during raucous recording sessions, endless ground and air-travel, and alcohol-fuelled tours (we never used drugs, thankfully, otherwise the music, let alone the photography, would have been impossible).

I used a simple consumer-level 35mm camera - it was all I could afford at the time (yes, rock stars are not as rich as they may look).
The still sequences are taken from my film MOTT IN AMERICA,shot during our 1974 US tour with a 1950’s Bolex B8L 8mm cine camera.
This is not documentary - it is the personal view of a young British musician bedazzled by rock’n’roll success and by the impact of America in the 70’s, a golden age in many ways.
I am not the only one who feels that about the 70’s.

In October 2009 Mott held 7 reunion concerts (with the original 5 members - I joined in 1973, 4 years after the band started). 20,000 people travelled from all over the world to see them perform in London.
I hope these images bring back some of the excitement, the humour, and the humanity of Mott the Hoople, a classic band I feel honoured to have been a part of.

In the 70's I played on several concert tours with Mott the Hoople in the USA, UK and Europe. Often I would be travelling non-stop for three months, shooting photographs wherever I went. I wanted to see the photographs immediately, so I would have them quickly printed in a local camera shop. I never cared which brand of film I bought - just whatever was available locally. So the quality of film processing was not to the highest standard or consistency. After I returned home, I would stash the negatives in their original envelopes together with the prints, and many of them became curled. In the 70's I moved house several times, and each time the photos and negatives would be packed in boxes or suitcases without much thought for their protection. When I left England and starting living abroad in 1981, I stored the negatives in a cardboard box in my mother's attic in Canterbury, where they were dry, but gathered dust for nearly three decades.

In October 2009 the five original members of Mott the Hoople (I joined the band in 1973) agreed to perform some reunion shows in London. I decided to take a look at the negatives and see what I had shot. I climbed the ladder to mum's attic, brought down the dusty box and took out the negatives in their old Kodak and Ilford and Agfa envelopes. There was less damage than I had expected, but inevitably they had aged, with fading, dust, and many scratches (especially the fragile black and white film). However, after a little care and cleaning, I think the photographs have turned out well. Like antique furniture, or old records, one does not expect - or even need - perfection. I was able to exhibit some of them successfully at the Troubadour Gallery in London during the week of the Mott the Hoople concerts. I am delighted to be able to exhibit even more of them here at Gallery Bauhaus.

PS ‐ the same story applies to the stills from my 8mm film, with the addition of the film grain being more visible in these tiny images.
